What Was Beneath the Pyramid
They returned to the chamber before sunrise.
The air was cool.
The desert was almost completely empty.
Inside the corridor, the walls were covered with ancient symbols.
Eventually, they reached the chamber from Emily’s dream.
The stone coffin stood in the center.
But it wasn’t a coffin.
Dr. Kareem examined it carefully.
“It is not for a body.”
He found a hidden opening beneath the lid.
Inside was an empty compartment.
A place where something had once been kept.
The golden scorpion.
Emily stepped closer.
Then she noticed another carving.
It showed a woman holding a baby.
Above them was a scorpion.
Dr. Kareem translated the symbols as best he could.
The message was not a curse.
It was a warning.

Emily looked at her father.
“So none of this was about death?”
Dr. Kareem shook his head.
“No.”
“What was it about?”
“Respect.”
Suddenly, a sound came from the corridor.
Scratching.
Everyone froze.
A large scorpion appeared beneath the doorway.
Emily stepped backward.
The creature stopped.
For several seconds, it simply looked at her.
Then it turned.
It disappeared into the darkness.
Emily began to cry.
Not from fear.
From relief.
She finally understood.
The scorpion had never been her enemy.
