The Photograph
Months later, Emily returned home.
The sting had healed completely.
Her family never spoke publicly about what happened in Egypt.
They didn’t know whether to call it spiritual, coincidence, instinct, or something else.
But Emily kept one photograph.
The original photograph she had taken before the attack.
She printed it and placed it beside her bed.
For years, she would look at it whenever she wondered whether the experience had really happened the way she remembered.
Then, one evening, she noticed something she had never seen before.
The photograph had been taken from a distance.
The pyramid was in the background.
The ancient stone was visible.
The strange symbol was there.
And behind Emily stood a faint figure.
The same woman from her dream.
Emily zoomed in.
Her heart stopped.
The woman wasn’t looking at the camera.
She was looking directly at Emily.
And in her hand was the golden scorpion.
Emily stared at the image for a long time.
Then she noticed one final detail.
At the bottom of the photograph, almost hidden beneath the sand, was a second inscription.
She translated it years later.
It contained only five words.
“Some guardians choose the living.”
Emily never returned to Egypt.
But every year, on the anniversary of the scorpion sting, she received an anonymous photograph in her email.
There was never a message.
Never a name.
Only a photograph.
Always the same desert.
Always the same pyramid.
And always, somewhere in the sand…
a single scorpion.
The last photograph arrived twenty years after the trip.
This time, however, there was something different.
The scorpion was not alone.
Beside it was a small golden object.
The missing artifact.
And beneath it, freshly written in the sand, were four words:
“It is awake again.”
