The Vacation of a Lifetime and The Scorpion at the Pyramid

 The Vacation of a Lifetime

When Daniel Carter booked the trip to Egypt, he imagined photographs, ancient temples, and a few unforgettable days with his family.

He never imagined that one afternoon near the pyramids would change the way they understood life, death, and the things that may exist beyond what we can see.

Daniel was fifty-one, his wife Laura was forty-seven, and their two children, Emily and Ryan, were both adults. Emily was twenty-four and had always been fascinated by ancient civilizations. Ryan, twenty-one, was more interested in adventure, photography, and getting away from home for a while.

It was Emily who had begged them to visit Egypt.

“I’ve wanted to see the pyramids since I was a little girl,” she had told her father.

So, after months of planning, the four of them finally stood beneath the Egyptian sun, staring at the enormous stones of Giza.

The heat was intense.

Daniel adjusted his hat and laughed.

“Your dream better be worth this heat.”

Emily smiled.

“It already is.”

She lifted her phone and began taking photographs.

At first, everything felt perfect.

They walked among the ancient stones, listened to their guide explain the history, and watched tourists moving across the desert.

But then Emily noticed something.

A little farther from the main tourist path was an old section of stone partially buried beneath the sand.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about it.

Except for one thing.

Carved into the stone was a symbol Emily had never seen before.

It looked almost like a scorpion.

She stepped closer.

“Emily!” her mother called. “Don’t go too far.”

“I’m coming!”

Emily took one last photograph.

Then she turned around.

And screamed.

Something had moved beneath her foot.

A dark scorpion crawled rapidly across the sand.

Emily jumped backward.

But she was already too late.

The creature struck.

She felt a sharp, burning pain in her ankle.

Her scream echoed across the desert.

Daniel ran toward her.

“Emily!”

She stumbled, clutching her leg.

The scorpion disappeared beneath a stone.

And none of them noticed the strange symbol Emily had photographed.

Not yet.
