The Vacation of a Lifetime and The Scorpion at the Pyramid

The Words She Couldn’t Explain

Within minutes, Daniel had Emily sitting down while Laura tried to keep her calm.

“Look at me,” Laura said. “Breathe. Just breathe.”

Emily was sweating.

Her face had gone pale.

“My leg is burning.”

Their guide immediately called for medical assistance.

Everyone around them seemed to be talking at once.

Daniel kept asking how far the nearest medical facility was.

But Emily suddenly stopped responding.

She stared toward the pyramid.

Her eyes were open, but she seemed to be looking at something that nobody else could see.

“Emily?”

She whispered something.

Laura leaned closer.

“What did you say?”

Emily repeated it.

This time, Daniel heard her.

“It is beneath the stone.”

“What is beneath the stone?” he asked.

Emily looked at him.

For a moment, her expression was completely different.

Almost peaceful.

Then she said something that made no sense.

“The guardian has awakened.”

Daniel exchanged a confused look with Laura.

“What guardian?”

Emily didn’t answer.

She fainted.

At the hospital, doctors treated the sting and monitored her closely.

Fortunately, the reaction was not as severe as everyone had feared.

The doctor told them that she was lucky.

“She should recover,” he said. “But keep watching her.”

Daniel finally allowed himself to breathe.

Later that evening, Emily woke.

Her parents were beside her.

She looked around the room.

“What happened?”

“You were stung by a scorpion,” Laura said gently.

Emily frowned.

“I remember.”

Daniel smiled.

“Then you remember saying something about a guardian?”

Emily stared at him.

“What guardian?”

“You don’t remember?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel thought she was joking.

Then he noticed something.

Emily was staring at the photograph on her phone.

The picture she had taken before the attack.

She zoomed in.

Her face slowly changed.

“Dad…”

“What?”

“Look at that.”

Near the bottom corner of the photograph was the ancient stone.

And on it was the strange scorpion-like symbol.

But there was something else.

A shadow.

A human-shaped shadow appeared behind the stone.

Except there had been nobody standing there.
