The sound came out broken.
“So the banquet…”
“May have been intended to create supporting evidence.”
I looked at Fiona.
She was coloring a duck purple.
“Did he know his mother would hit her?”
“We don’t know.”
I closed my eyes.
That distinction somehow made it worse.
Because whether Luca predicted the slap or not, he had brought his wife and two-year-old daughter into a room intending to manufacture a scene he could use in court.
Every fight from the previous month rearranged itself in my memory.
Luca asking why I “hated” his mother.
Luca repeatedly suggesting I was “overreacting.”
Luca insisting Wendy babysit even after I said no.
His strange new habit of sending follow-up texts after arguments.
You were really upset tonight.
I hope you calm down.
I had thought he was trying to communicate better.
He had been creating a record.
Three days later, Luca appeared at Rachel’s building.
He waited outside.
He did not come up.
He called me.
I answered because Mara said I could, as long as I stayed calm and recorded details immediately
afterward.
“I want to see Fiona.”
“Your lawyer can arrange it.”
“Jesus, Jessi.”
His voice cracked.
For one stupid second, I missed him.
