My mother-in-law slapped my two-year-old daughter across the face at her own birthday banquet, called my little girl “defective,” and my husband just sat there. Minutes later, his glasses were floating in a bowl of stew, his mother was buried face-first in her birthday cake, and I was walking out with my child, but none of them knew I’d spent the past month preparing for the exact moment my husband finally chose his mother over his daughter

“Do you think he was setting me up?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

The word landed like a brick.

“What for?”

“We’ll find out.”

Fiona’s doctor documented the handprint.

A police report followed.

I hated every minute.

I hated explaining the slap to strangers.

I hated watching Fiona hide behind my legs.

I hated the camera flash used to photograph her cheek.

Most of all, I hated that Luca had made the truth something that needed evidence.

By Monday, Mara had filed for temporary custody arrangements.

Luca’s attorney responded almost immediately.

That told us something.

He had already hired one.

Not after the banquet.

Before.

Mara called me.

“Jessica, I need you to hear this without panicking.”

I sat on Rachel’s couch.

Fiona colored beside me.

“I’m listening.”

“Luca’s attorney had a draft custody petition prepared eleven days before Wendy’s birthday.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“They haven’t filed it. But they referenced it in correspondence.”

“What does it say?”

Another pause.

“That you’re volatile. That you’ve become hostile toward his family. That you’ve restricted Fiona’s relationship with her paternal grandmother. That you have emotional outbursts.”

I almost laughed.
