But Kelly’s video did not end there.
That was what mattered.
Seconds after the banquet doors closed behind me, Luca’s voice cut through the chaos.
“Mom, what the hell?”
Wendy screamed, “She attacked me!”
“You hit Fiona!”
“You told me to provoke her!”
“I told you to provoke Jessica, not hit a two-year-old!”
My blood turned to ice.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Wendy hissed, “What difference does it make? Look what she did.”
Luca replied, very softly:
“Because now she can say she was protecting Fiona.”
Silence.
Then Wendy said, “Did Kelly get it?”
The camera moved violently.
Kelly must have realized they were talking about her.
Luca’s voice became clearer.
“She was filming the candles.”
Wendy lowered hers.
“Is that enough?”
Luca answered.
“It should be.”
The video ended.
For nearly a minute neither Rachel nor I moved.
Then I walked into her bathroom and threw up.
At 7:15 the next morning, I called an attorney.
Her name was Mara Hernandez.
Rachel had found her three weeks earlier when I first started preparing.
Mara listened without interrupting.
Then she said, “Take Fiona to her pediatrician. Today. Photograph the injury in natural light. Save every message from your husband. Don’t edit anything. Don’t post anything online. And send me the original video file.”
