His reaction made me even more suspicious.
I reached for the envelope.
He moved between us.
“I said leave them alone!”
Mama Grace grabbed his arm.
“Kelly, what are you hiding?”
He pulled away.
“Mother, this is none of your business.”
“None of my business? A pregnant woman has come into your house claiming that you promised her a home, and you expect me to pretend I haven’t heard anything?”
Nonye began crying.
For the first time since I had known her, she didn’t look confident.
She looked frightened.
“I thought he was telling me the truth,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Which truth?”
She wiped her cheeks.
“Kelly told me that you both had already agreed to separate. He said you knew about me and that you were only staying in the marriage because you had nowhere else to go.”
I stared at my husband.
He had told his mistress that our marriage was practically over while telling me that he wanted us to start again.
