Mama Grace’s expression changed.
“What home? What family?”
Nonye looked at her in confusion.
“Didn’t Kelly tell you?”
His mother turned toward him.
“Kelly, what has this woman been talking about?”
He rubbed his face.
“Everybody needs to calm down.”
I almost laughed.
He had spent months telling me to calm down whenever I asked him for the truth. Now he was using the same words on the people who had discovered his lies.
Nonye placed the envelope on the dining table.
“Here are the documents you asked me to sign.”
Kelly rushed forward and tried to take them.
She pulled them away.
“No! Not this time. You told me these papers would protect me and the baby. You said the house would be ours after everything was completed.”
I felt a chill run down my spine.
The house?
I stepped closer.
“What papers?”
Kelly looked at me sharply.
“Ella, don’t touch those documents.”
