A pregnancy could not erase any of that.
“Let’s confirm it first,” I whispered.
He nodded eagerly.
“Yes, yes. We’ll go to the hospital tomorrow.”
Then he did something I hadn’t expected.
He picked up his phone and walked into the kitchen.
I followed him quietly.
He called someone.
“Nonye, I need to talk to you.”
There was a pause.
“Ella may be pregnant.”
I stopped breathing.
He listened for several seconds, then lowered his voice.
“No, I’m not joking. Her period is late, and she’s been feeling sick.”
Another pause.
“Listen to me. Don’t do anything stupid. I’ll explain everything later.”
He ended the call.
I stepped into the kitchen.
“Why did you tell her?”
He turned around.
“Tell her what?”
“That I might be pregnant.”
He looked uncomfortable.
“She deserves to know what’s happening.”
I stared at him.
“Why? So she can insult me again?”
“Ella, stop this. You don’t understand the situation.”
