“Then explain it to me!”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I can’t explain everything right now.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course you can’t.”
He reached for my hand, but I moved away.
“Tomorrow, we’re going to the hospital,” I said. “And after that, Kelly, we’re going to have a serious conversation about our marriage.”
He nodded.
For the rest of the evening, he treated me like a precious treasure.
He brought me water. He asked whether I wanted food. He told me not to lift anything heavy.
Every gesture reminded me of how differently he had treated me only days earlier.
That night, I barely slept.
I was frightened by the lie I had told, but I was even more frightened by the possibility that Kelly’s sudden affection had nothing to do with love.
The following morning, he woke me early.
“Get ready, Ella. We’re going to the hospital.”
I nodded.
