When I came out of the bathroom, he was standing in the hallway.
“What took you so long?”
I looked at him.
“Kelly, I think I’m pregnant.”
He froze.
“What?”
“My period is late. I’ve been feeling sick. I haven’t confirmed it yet, but I think it’s possible.”
I watched his face change.
For the first time in months, he looked genuinely happy.
He grabbed my hands.
“Ella, are you serious?”
I nodded slowly.
He pulled me into his arms.
“Thank God! Finally!”
His excitement was so intense that I almost broke down and confessed that I had no positive test.
He kissed my forehead and held me tightly.
“We’re going to have a baby,” he whispered. “Do you know what this means?”
I closed my eyes.
I knew exactly what he thought it meant.
He believed that the problem destroying our marriage had finally disappeared.
But I was still the same woman he had mocked, the same woman he had slapped, and the same woman whose pain he had discussed with his mistress.
