WHEN MY HUSBAND’S PREGNANT MISTRESS CALLED ME BARREN, I PRETENDED TO BE PREGNANT—BUT SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I HAD DISCOVERED

For the first time, I knew I had caught him off guard.

“What money?”

I took the bank statements from my bag and placed them on the table.

“These transfers. Where did our savings go?”

He looked at the papers, then at me.

“Why were you checking the account?”

“Because I am a joint account holder, Kelly.”

“You don’t understand my business.”

“Then explain it to me.”

He picked up the statements, glanced through them, and dropped them back onto the table.

“I invested the money.”

“Where?”

“In a business opportunity.”

“What business?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Ella, I don’t have time for this.”

“You have time to spend money on another woman, but you don’t have time to explain where our savings went?”

He stepped toward me.

“Be careful.”

I remembered the slap from the previous night and instinctively moved backward.

He noticed.

For a moment, something resembling shame crossed his face.
