“How much?”
I told her.
She fell silent.
“Ella, please don’t confront him alone. Find out what you can, protect your documents, and make sure you have somewhere safe to stay if things become dangerous.”
I promised I would be careful.
That evening, I returned home earlier than usual.
Kelly was in the living room, speaking on the phone.
He immediately ended the call when he saw me.
“Who were you talking to?” I asked.
“A business associate.”
“Nonye?”
His expression changed.
“Must you mention that woman’s name every time you open your mouth?”
I stared at him.
“She’s pregnant with your child, Kelly. What exactly do you expect me to do? Pretend she doesn’t exist?”
He threw his keys onto the table.
“I told you I would handle it.”
“Handle what? Your affair? Your child? Or the money you’ve been taking from our savings?”
His face went completely still.
