Then his phone rang.
He answered it angrily.
“What is it now?”
I couldn’t hear the other person’s words, but I watched his expression change.
“No, you cannot come here tonight,” he said.
A pause.
“I said no!”
He ended the call and walked toward the bedroom.
I followed him.
“Was that Nonye?”
He didn’t answer.
“Kelly, I need the truth.”
He turned around.
“The truth is that I’m tired of this marriage! I’m tired of coming home to a woman who questions everything I do!”
I felt my heart drop.
“Then why don’t you leave?”
The words escaped before I could stop them.
He stared at me.
“What?”
“If you’re so unhappy, why are you still here? Why are you keeping me in this marriage while promising another woman a future?”
He said nothing.
I continued, my voice breaking.
“You cannot have it both ways, Kelly. You cannot humiliate me in private and expect me to smile when you come home. You cannot let another woman call me barren and expect me to pretend that you love me.”
