“She had given birth to a little girl who died shortly after delivery. She returned to work because she didn’t know what else to do with her grief.”
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
I had never known that.
My mother had told me stories about her younger years, but she had never mentioned losing a child.
Robert continued.
“When Sarah realized her treatment might take months, she asked Margaret to promise that her daughter would be safe. Eventually, after discussing the matter with the people responsible for her care, Sarah agreed to a legal adoption.”
“Are you saying Margaret adopted me?”
“Yes.”
He placed another document in front of me.
It was an adoption record.
My name appeared near the bottom, followed by Margaret’s signature.
I stared at the handwriting.
I had seen that signature thousands of times on birthday cards, school forms, and notes she left on the kitchen counter.
