“Your mother took care of her.”
He corrected himself almost immediately.
“Margaret. The woman who raised you.”
I gripped the edge of the table beside me.
“Margaret worked here?”
“She was a nurse. She had been caring for Sarah throughout her stay. When Sarah was transferred, Margaret volunteered to look after the baby temporarily.”
“Why?”
“Because Sarah was frightened. She had no stable home, no family willing to help her, and no certainty about her recovery. She believed she might never be able to raise her daughter.”
I shook my head.
“Why didn’t she ask someone else for help?”
“She did. But there weren’t many options available to her at the time.”
Robert paused.
“Margaret became attached to the baby. She had lost her own newborn daughter several years earlier, and she had never entirely recovered from that grief.”
I looked up sharply.
“My mother had another child?”
Robert nodded.
