The Woman in the Photograph
The photograph showed a young woman with dark hair falling around her shoulders. She looked no older than nineteen.
Her eyes were large and expressive, and there was a small crescent-shaped mark near her left eyebrow.
I touched my own eyebrow instinctively.
I had the same mark.
“Who is she?” I whispered.
Robert pulled out another document.
“Her name was Sarah Miller. Twenty-nine years ago, she was admitted to this hospital. She was nineteen years old, pregnant, and almost entirely alone.”
I stared at the photograph.
“Why are you showing me this?”
“Because Sarah gave birth to a baby girl here.”
The room seemed to tilt around me.
Robert continued carefully.
“The birth was difficult. Shortly afterward, Sarah developed a serious medical complication. She needed specialized treatment that our hospital could not provide. Her condition deteriorated, and she was transferred to another facility.”
“What happened to the baby?”
