There was no mistaking it.
“Does Margaret know I’ve seen this?”
“She knows the truth,” Robert replied. “She has known it from the beginning.”
I pressed my hands against my face.
For twenty-nine years, I had believed Margaret had carried me, given birth to me, and brought me home.
Now I was being told that the woman I called my mother had chosen to raise me, while another woman had given birth to me and disappeared from my life.
“Did Sarah abandon me?”
The question came out so quietly that Robert had to lean closer to hear it.
“No,” he said firmly. “She did not abandon you.”
“Then why didn’t she come back?”
“Because life became more complicated than anyone expected.”
He opened the folder to another set of papers.
“Sarah eventually recovered. She worked, rebuilt her life, and tried to locate you. But the adoption records were difficult to access, and she didn’t have enough information to find Margaret. Years passed. Every time she reached a dead end, she started again.”
