“What’s all this?”
Derek took a breath.
“Mom, we need to discuss the salary arrangement.”
Her smile faded.
“Again?”
“Yes.”
She sat down.
Derek continued.
“I can’t give you my entire income.”
Patricia stared at him.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“I love you, Mom.”
She folded her arms.
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because I have a mortgage. Insurance. Household expenses. Savings obligations.”
She pointed toward me.
“That’s Lauren talking.”
Derek shook his head.
“No. That’s me finally looking at the numbers.”
I studied him.
Patricia’s expression tightened.
“Your wife has plenty of money.”
Derek nodded slowly.
“She does.”
Then he looked at her.
“But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t contribute.”
I felt something shift inside me.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But recognition.
For once, my husband had acknowledged something without needing me to drag it out of him.
Patricia began crying.
She said she’d sacrificed everything raising Derek.
