Daniel Reed.
Maxwell’s closest friend.
His best man.
The man who had been there the night Maxwell broke up with Sophia.
The man who had told her, “Maxwell doesn’t want this relationship anymore. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
Sophia looked toward the head table.
Daniel was gone.
Maxwell suddenly ran.
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Emily stood frozen.
Sophia looked at Catherine.
“Where did he go?”
Catherine pointed toward the service corridor.
Sophia followed.
She didn’t know why.
Maybe because six months of unanswered questions had just opened a door.
Maybe because she finally had the chance to know why Maxwell had disappeared from her life.
They found him behind the kitchen.
Daniel was standing beside a service exit with his jacket in his hand.
Maxwell blocked the door.
“You hired her.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You brought Sophia here.”
Still nothing.
“Why?”
Daniel finally looked at him.
“Because you were going to marry Emily without telling her.”
Maxwell’s jaw tightened.
“You had no right.”
“No?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You had every right to destroy Sophia’s life, apparently.”
Sophia stood at the end of the corridor.
Daniel saw her.
His expression changed.
“Sophia.”
She stepped closer.
“Tell me everything.”
