SIX MONTHS PREGNANT , I WAS HIRED TO SING AT MY EX’S WEDDING—THEN THE GROOM REALIZED THE SONG WAS ABOUT THE LIFE HE TRIED TO ERASE –

He walked toward the edge of the stage.

Sophia kept singing.

He waited until the song ended.

Then he approached her.

“You’re pregnant.”

Sophia looked at him.

“Yes.”

His voice dropped.

“How far?”

“Twenty-eight weeks.”

He stared at her stomach.

“Twins?”

Sophia’s heart stopped.

“How did you know?”

Maxwell looked terrified.

“Because I knew.”

She frowned.

“You knew?”

Before he could answer, the bride appeared behind him.

“Max?”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What is going on?”

Maxwell turned.

“Emily, I can explain.”

Sophia stepped away from the microphone.

She suddenly understood.

The bride’s name was Emily Carter.

And Emily had no idea who Sophia was.

Sophia looked between them.

“Maybe you should explain everything.”

Maxwell grabbed Sophia’s arm.

“Not here.”

She pulled away.

“You invited me here.”

“I didn’t know you would actually come.”

Sophia stared at him.

“You hired me.”

“No.”

His face tightened.

“I didn’t.”

Sophia froze.

“What?”

“I never hired you.”

Catherine appeared behind them.

“What’s happening?”

Sophia turned toward her.

“You said the groom’s office requested me.”

Catherine looked confused.

“That is what we were told.”

“By whom?”

Catherine checked her tablet.

“An assistant named Daniel.”

Maxwell’s face went completely pale.

“Daniel.”

Sophia recognized the name.
