SIX MONTHS PREGNANT , I WAS HIRED TO SING AT MY EX’S WEDDING—THEN THE GROOM REALIZED THE SONG WAS ABOUT THE LIFE HE TRIED TO ERASE –

Daniel looked at Maxwell.

Then at her.

“Six months ago, Maxwell came to me and told me he had made a mistake.”

Sophia said nothing.

“He said he loved you, but his father threatened to cut him off from the company if he married you.”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

Maxwell looked down.

Daniel continued.

“He was supposed to tell you the truth.”

“But he didn’t.”

“No.”

Sophia looked at Maxwell.

“You let me believe you stopped loving me.”

Maxwell’s voice broke.

“I was afraid.”

“You were afraid?”

Sophia laughed once.

“You were afraid, so you destroyed me?”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You disappeared.”

“I know.”

“You blocked my number.”

“I know.”

“You told me the pregnancy wasn’t your problem.”

Maxwell closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Sophia’s voice became quieter.

“And now you’re marrying another woman.”

Maxwell looked at her.

“I never stopped loving you.”

Sophia stared at him.

“That doesn’t matter anymore.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“There is something else.”

Sophia looked at him.

“What?”

“Your medical bills.”

She frowned.

“What about them?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out several documents.

“Maxwell has been paying them.”

Sophia stared at the papers.

“What?”

“For six months.”

She looked at Maxwell.
