“Goodbye, Martha.”
“Goodbye, Brittany. Take care of yourself.”
She nodded and walked away.
Harold and I collected our belongings and followed the crowd toward the arrivals hall.
My granddaughter Emily was waiting beyond the barriers with her mother. The moment she saw me, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around my waist.
“Grandma! Did you bring my surprise?”
I laughed and kissed the top of her head.
“Of course I did.”
I reached into my handbag and pulled out the small gift.
Emily’s eyes widened when she saw the colorful package.
“SLIME! Grandma, you’re the best!”
She hugged me again.
For a moment, I forgot all about the airplane, the spoiled lunch, and the ridiculous argument over eight hundred dollars’ worth of hair.
I was simply a grandmother watching a child light up with happiness over something small.
And that, I thought, was what Brittany had been searching for all along.
