Not perfect hair.
Not expensive perfume.
Not a thousand strangers watching her through a screen.
She wanted to feel special.
The sad thing was that she had spent so much time trying to prove her worth to people she had never met that she had forgotten how to make the people around her feel valued.
I never learned whether Brittany deleted her video or whether it continued circulating online. I never found out whether she changed her spending habits or whether she bought another bottle of expensive perfume the following week.
People do not transform their lives in a single afternoon just because someone gives them a memorable lecture.
But I hoped she remembered our conversation.
I hoped that the next time she stood in a crowded line, she would notice the tired person behind her.
I hoped that the next time she felt the urge to make someone else feel small, she would remember how it felt to sit in that airplane seat, embarrassed and frightened, wishing she could take back her behavior.
