My son and daughter-in-law laughed when I walked into the courtroom. “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing

Then he turned toward me.

“Mrs. Vance, based on the evidence presented, I find no basis whatsoever for guardianship.”

I let out a breath I had been holding for months.

“The petition is denied.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Judge Mercer continued.

“The temporary restrictions placed on Mrs. Vance’s accounts are terminated immediately.”

Then he looked toward the prosecutor.

“Additionally, I am referring the record for investigation of possible forgery, financial exploitation, unlawful restraint, intimidation and related offenses.”

Vanessa whispered something to Hale.

He did not respond.

His career was suddenly his own problem.

But Judge Mercer wasn’t finished.

“There remains the question of Mrs. Vance’s residence.”

My house.

Daniel looked at me.

He knew.

I stood.

“Your Honor, I would like my keys returned.”

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Immediately.”

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He placed the keys on the table between us.

I stared at them.

Forty years of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Richard dancing badly in the kitchen.

Daniel doing homework at the dining table.

My granddaughter, Lily, taking her first steps across the living-room rug.

A house is never just wood.

That is why taking one from someone can be such a profound cruelty.
