I felt something tighten in my chest.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Make little comments about my marriage.”
She raised both hands.
“Goodness, Amanda. I was joking.”
“Then find a better joke.”
For the first time, her smile disappeared completely.
She set down her cup.
“Honestly, I think you’re making this into something it isn’t.”
“And I think you’re deliberately doing something I’ve asked you not to do.”
She leaned against the counter and looked at me with an expression I knew very well.
It was the look she used when she believed she had discovered a weakness in someone.
“Can I tell you something?”
I folded my arms.
“You’re going to tell me anyway.”
She smiled again.
“Think of it as a test.”
I stared at her.
“A test?”
“Yes.”
She took another sip of coffee, enjoying the suspense she had created.
“If your husband is so loyal, what exactly are you worried about?”
