Kayla would come downstairs in her towel.
Andrew would suddenly remember something he needed to do somewhere else.
And I would be left standing there, wondering why my own home felt like a stage for a performance I had never agreed to watch.
One morning, she even called after him.
“Andrew! Where are you going? I haven’t finished talking to you.”
He stopped near the doorway.
“Then finish talking to me.”
She blinked.
He waited.
She looked toward the cabinet.
“Could you get the coffee filters?”
Andrew stared at her for a moment.
Then he took the filters from the shelf and placed them on the counter.
“Anything else?”
Kayla smiled sweetly.
“Not at the moment.”
“Wonderful. Enjoy your coffee.”
He walked away.
She watched him go, then turned to me.
“He’s always in such a hurry.”
“Maybe he’s busy.”
“Or maybe you’re keeping him on a very short leash.”
