My name is Matt. I’m thirty. And being a doctor is the only thing I’ve ever wanted.

“How it looks?” Her voice broke. “I buried my sister today, Lucas. Today. And now I find out that she left you money that was supposed to help our family.”

“I didn’t ask her for anything.”

“Maybe you didn’t have to.”

She stepped back.

“I should have seen this coming.”

“Nora, please.”

“I’m reporting you to the hospital.”

She walked away before I could respond.

I remained beside my car, holding the open box.

I wanted to run after her.

I wanted to tell her that I had no knowledge of the inheritance.

I wanted to make her understand that I had not planned any of this.

But beneath those feelings was another thought, one I was ashamed to admit.

The money would erase my loans.

I could finally stop calculating the cost of every unexpected bill.

I could help my parents without worrying about whether I would have enough left for rent.
