My hands went cold.
I had never heard Alicia mention this money.
I had never discussed finances with her.
I had no idea why she had chosen to leave it to me.
Then I heard Nora’s voice.
“What the hell is that?”
She had leaned over my shoulder and seen the letter.
I turned toward her.
“Nora, I didn’t know.”
She snatched the document from my hand and scanned the page.
“She left you Grandma’s money?”
“I didn’t know about it. I swear.”
“You married my dying sister, and now you’re telling me you had no idea she’d leave you an inheritance?”
“The marriage wasn’t about money.”
“Then what was it about?”
I opened my mouth, but every explanation sounded inadequate.
She looked at the box again, then at me.
“You were her doctor. You were with her every day. You knew she was dying.”
“I know how this looks.”
