My mother-in-law slapped my two-year-old daughter across the face at her own birthday banquet, called my little girl “defective,” and my husband just sat there. Minutes later, his glasses were floating in a bowl of stew, his mother was buried face-first in her birthday cake, and I was walking out with my child, but none of them knew I’d spent the past month preparing for the exact moment my husband finally chose his mother over his daughter

Wendy whispered, “So she really is planning to leave.”

“Yes.”

“And take Fiona.”

“Yes.”

“What do you want me to do?”

A pause.

Then Luca answered.

“Make her choose.”

I frowned.

Wendy asked, “Choose what?”

“You or me.”

My breathing stopped.

“Push her until she says something she can’t take back. If she attacks you, even better.”

Wendy laughed softly.

“Luca.”

“I’m serious.”

“What about Fiona?”

“She’s the pressure point.”

My hand started shaking.

Wendy hesitated.

Even Wendy hesitated.

“She’s two.”

Luca’s reply came without hesitation.

“I’m not saying hurt her.”

“But?”

“Jessica only loses control when she thinks someone’s coming after Fiona.”

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Kelly’s video continued.

Wendy asked, “And if she leaves anyway?”

Luca said:

“Then I file Monday.”

The clip ended.

I sat at my new kitchen table until the coffee went cold.

Everything I had believed during the past two months collapsed.

The handwritten warning.

No touching Fiona.

No yelling directly at her.

I had treated it as proof that some part of him had tried to protect his daughter.

Now I understood.

It had never been about protecting Fiona.

It had been about controlling the experiment.
