My mother-in-law slapped my two-year-old daughter across the face at her own birthday banquet, called my little girl “defective,” and my husband just sat there. Minutes later, his glasses were floating in a bowl of stew, his mother was buried face-first in her birthday cake, and I was walking out with my child, but none of them knew I’d spent the past month preparing for the exact moment my husband finally chose his mother over his daughter

“What?”

“You know how the police copied the original video from my phone?”

“Yes.”

“I was cleaning out cloud storage last night.”

She paused.

“There was another clip.”

I gripped the counter.

“From the banquet?”

“Before.”

My chest tightened.

“How long before?”

“About twenty minutes.”

Kelly sounded close to tears.

“I didn’t know it was recording. I think I hit the button while I was setting my phone against the centerpiece.”

“Send it.”

“Jessi—”

“Send it.”

The file appeared thirty seconds later.

I sat down.

Pressed play.

The camera faced sideways.

Mostly tablecloth.

Chair legs.

People moving in and out of frame.

Then Luca sat down nearby.

I recognized his shoes.

Wendy joined him.

Her voice was low.

“Kelly’s phone is there.”

“I know.”

“Is it recording?”

Luca leaned closer.

The camera shook slightly.

Then he said:

“It will be when they bring the cake.”

Wendy sighed.

“What if Jessica doesn’t react?”

“She will.”

“You sound certain.”

“She’s already packed documents.”

My blood stopped.

Wendy went silent.

Then:

“What?”

“I found copies missing from the file cabinet.”

My heart hammered.

Luca had known.

He had known I was preparing.

That was why the birthday plan had suddenly appeared.
