Rachel’s eyes flashed.
“You think you’ve won something?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I think I have finally stopped pretending I haven’t lost anything.”
She stared at me.
Then she turned to Tyler.
“Are you coming?”
Tyler looked at her.
For a long moment, I thought he might follow her immediately, as he had done so many times over the past year.
Instead, he remained beside the table.
Rachel waited.
“Tyler?”
He looked down at the documents.
Then he looked up at her.
“I need to understand what is happening.”
Her face hardened.
“You’re unbelievable.”
She opened the front door and walked outside.
Tyler did not follow.
For the first time since she had entered my life, Rachel left without getting what she had come for.
But I knew the confrontation was not over.
Not yet.
After Rachel left, Tyler remained seated at the kitchen table.
Margaret gathered the documents into a neat stack.
