“I’m going to give you both some space,” she said. “But Debra, I want you to remember what we discussed. Don’t make financial or legal decisions under pressure. We’ll arrange a meeting with the lawyer.”
She looked at Tyler.
“And I suggest you do the same.”
Then she kissed my cheek and left the room.
Tyler watched her go.
When we were alone, he spoke in a voice I barely recognized.
“Did you really ask Margaret to investigate me?”
“I asked her to help me understand why things weren’t adding up.”
“You could have asked me.”
I stared at him.
“I did.”
He looked away.
I continued.
“I asked you about the late nights. I asked you about the restaurant. I asked you why you were distant. Every time, you made me feel as though I was imagining things.”
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“You could have started with the truth.”
