I looked at my husband.
He said nothing.
I remembered that evening now.
Tyler had returned from the gathering in a foul mood. He had complained about work, about his colleagues, and about how people with family money had advantages other people could never enjoy.
At the time, I had thought he was simply frustrated.
I had not realized that another woman might have been listening.
Margaret tapped the page.
“Rachel, did Tyler tell you how this house was purchased?”
Rachel’s face had become unreadable.
“Yes.”
“Did he tell you that the money came from Debra’s inheritance?”
“Yes.”
“And did he tell you that the property is registered in her name?”
Rachel hesitated.
“He said they had arrangements.”
“What arrangements?”
She looked at Tyler.
“Tyler?”
He rubbed his jaw.
“I said we’d work something out.”
Margaret nodded.
“That’s not the same thing as having an agreement.”
Rachel’s composure finally cracked.
