“You told me this was taken care of.”
Tyler looked at her.
“I said I would handle it.”
“You said she would move out.”
“I thought she would.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You thought she would?”
I watched the realization move across her face.
Until that moment, she had spoken as though Tyler possessed the authority to rearrange our lives whenever he wanted.
Now she was beginning to understand that he had not secured the one thing she had come to claim.
The house.
She turned back to me.
“You knew about us before today, didn’t you?”
I considered the question.
“I suspected something was wrong.”
“And you let me come here?”
“You came here because you believed Tyler’s promises. I didn’t invite you.”
She pushed her chair back.
“This is unbelievable.”
“Then perhaps you should ask Tyler to explain why he gave you the impression that my home was his to offer.”
