My Husband Moved His Mistress Into My House—But Neither of Them Knew What I Had Discovered

“Could it have been me?”

“I don’t know,” she said. “And I won’t pretend to know. The investigators are working to establish the facts.”

I appreciated her honesty more than she could have known.

For the next two days, I heard nothing.

Then, on the third evening, I received a call from the investigator.

He asked whether I was somewhere safe and whether I could speak privately.

I told him I could.

“We’ve identified the individual named in the earlier trust proposal,” he said.

I gripped the phone.

“Who?”

“Your husband, Richard Bennett.”

I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

“Richard?”

“Yes. The draft appears to have been structured around a payment that would become available following his death. We have not established who created the arrangement or why, and we have no basis to tell you that his death was planned. But the document raises serious questions about the people who stood to benefit.”
