I stared into the darkness beyond my window.
Richard had been moving money through Vesna’s company.
He had been trying to obtain documents from my home.
He had been telling people he could get the records from me.
And someone had drafted a financial arrangement in which his own death would trigger a payment.
For the first time, I wondered whether Richard had been the mastermind of the scheme at all.
Perhaps he had been a willing participant who believed he could outsmart everyone.
Perhaps he had been a useful intermediary who had become too dangerous to keep around.
Or perhaps the document was part of a different plan entirely.
I asked the investigator whether Richard knew about it.
“We’re still establishing that.”
“And Adrian Vale?”
“He’s a person of interest in the broader investigation. We are not making conclusions about his intentions before the evidence supports them.”
I thanked him.
