“You let me spend thirteen years believing he never tried to come back.”
“You were barely surviving, Olivia. I watched you wake up crying. I watched Lily sleep in your bed because she thought if she let go of you, you might disappear too.”
His voice shook.
“Then Carl showed up after ten months because he had finally decided he was ready. I was furious.”
“So you decided for me.”
“Yes.”
He wiped his face.
“And I was wrong.”
“Did he come back again?”
“No.”
“You stopped him every time?”
“No. Once.”
He looked at me steadily.
“After that, every year he stayed away was Carl’s choice.”

“Carl.”
Silence.
A long, stunned silence.
Then he whispered my name.
“Olivia.”
“I have the letters.”
His breathing changed.
