Larry Nassar Was Stabbed in Federal Prison: What Happened and What the Viral Headline Leaves Out
A viral graphic claims that Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor convicted of sexually abusing young athletes, was repeatedly stabbed by another inmate in prison.
The central claim is true.
Nassar was attacked inside his cell at a federal penitentiary in Florida on July 9, 2023. He was stabbed multiple times in the neck, chest and back, suffered serious injuries including a collapsed lung, received emergency treatment and survived.
Contemporaneous reporting indicated that he sustained 10 stab wounds.
The viral post, however, omits the date and nearly all of the context. Presented without that information, it may cause readers to believe the attack is recent or still developing.
Here is what reliable reporting established, what remains based on anonymous sourcing, and why the case raises questions extending beyond Nassar himself.
