My husband invited his ex-wife to his birthday because she was “still family”

I looked at him.

“Nothing.”

He stared at me.

Then his eyes moved toward the envelope.

His face changed.

“You opened that?”

I didn’t answer.

“Did you open it?”

“Yes.”

He closed the door behind him.

“Why would you do that?”

“Why would you hide it?”

“It’s private.”

“I’m your wife.”

“It’s a divorce document.”

“Exactly.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

He said nothing.

I waited.

Finally, he whispered,

“Claire still has an interest in the house.”

I stared at him.

“How long?”

He didn’t answer.

“How long, Mark?”

“Until the divorce agreement is fully settled.”

“And when is that?”

Silence.

“Mark.”

He looked away.

“Next year.”

My heart sank.

“Next year?”

He nodded.

“So when you told me this house was yours…”

“It is mine.”

“No. You told me I was building a home with you.”

“You are.”

“But Claire still has legal rights to it.”
