He looked frustrated.
“I was going to deal with it.”
“When?”
“Eventually.”
I laughed.
“Eventually?”
He stepped toward me.
“Please don’t ruin tonight.”
I looked at him.
“I’m not ruining anything, Mark.”
I wiped my eyes.
“You did that yourself.”
Then something strange happened.
He reached for my hand.
I pulled it away.
“I need you to answer one more question.”
“What?”
“Why does Claire know so much about our house?”
He froze.
I continued.
“Why does she walk into my kitchen like she still lives here?”
He didn’t answer.
“Why does she know where everything is?”
Still nothing.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting in the back of my mind for months.
“Have you been seeing her?”
Mark’s face went pale.
“No.”
I watched him carefully.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she tell me earlier that you still call her whenever you have problems?”
