Suddenly, I wasn’t so sure.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of an agreement.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
My heart began pounding.
There was Claire’s name.
And Mark’s.
And beneath their names was a clause concerning the house.
I read it twice.
Then three times.
The house wasn’t simply Mark’s.
It was connected to a property settlement from his divorce.
And according to the agreement, Claire retained certain rights to the property until a specific condition was met.
A condition that hadn’t been met.
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
My hands went cold.
That meant Claire hadn’t simply come to my house because Mark thought she was “still family.”
She had a legal connection to it.
But why hadn’t Mark told me?
I heard footsteps outside.
I quickly put the papers back.
The bedroom door opened.
Mark stood there.
“What are you doing in here?”
