My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney

My attorney preserved the email and its surrounding records.

Then, through the civil discovery process, we obtained a series of internal messages between Arthur and the company’s financial director.

One message was especially revealing.

If she continues asking questions, we should make her the problem. She has access to sensitive military work, and a public dispute could raise concerns about her judgment. She won’t risk her career to fight us.

I read the message in my attorney’s office.

For several seconds, I could not speak.

Arthur was not simply trying to protect his business. He was prepared to exploit my profession and reputation to discourage me from defending myself.

The next message was worse.

Vivian had written:

Daniel needs to get control of his wife. If she won’t listen to him, perhaps the court will.

I looked at my attorney.

“They believe they can make me disappear by making me look dangerous.”
