My In-Laws Laughed When I Walked Into Court Alone—Then the Judge Asked Everyone to Stand
The moment I walked into the courtroom, my mother-in-law covered her mouth to hide her laughter.
“Oh, look,” Vivian Hale whispered loudly enough for half the room to hear. “She actually came alone.”
My father-in-law, Arthur, leaned back in his chair and gave a mocking smile. Beside him sat his attorney, a silver-haired man carrying an expensive leather briefcase. My husband, Daniel, sat between his parents, staring at his phone as though the entire situation had nothing to do with him.
Then Vivian noticed the plain black suit I was wearing, the modest handbag hanging from my shoulder, and the absence of anyone standing beside me.
She smiled even wider.
“I suppose she couldn’t afford a proper lawyer.”
Arthur chuckled.
“Perhaps she thinks that wearing a uniform once or twice makes her an expert in everything.”
