My father-in-law laughed when I walked into court alone and said I was too broke to afford a lawyer, never realizing I had spent years as a military attorney

“But you’re thinking it.”

I could barely hear my own voice.

“I am thinking that my husband has taken our money, allowed someone to use my signature, and is now asking me to sign a document that may conceal what happened. What would you call that?”

He sat down and covered his face.

For a moment, I wanted to comfort him. I wanted him to tell me that there was an explanation, that he had made a mistake and was ready to make it right.

Instead, he said, “If you refuse to help us, my father will make sure you lose everything.”

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not because I was no longer afraid, but because I finally understood that the person threatening me was the man who had promised to protect me.

“I will not sign a false statement,” I said.

Daniel looked up.

“You would destroy your own family over a piece of paper?”
