“Daniel, please.”
“How long?”
“Please don’t do this like this.”
He let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“How would you prefer I find out? Should I have waited until you brought him to our house for dinner?”
She covered her mouth.
Mark tried to intervene.
“This is partly my fault.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“Do not call me son right now.”
Mark went silent.
Jenna wiped her face with a napkin.
“It started in June.”
I felt the room tilt.
Their wedding had been in July.
Daniel stared at her.
“You married me while you were sleeping with him?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
I placed my fork on the table.
“Be very careful with that sentence, Jenna.”
She looked at me, and for the first time since she arrived, she seemed to understand that I was not going to rescue her from the consequences of what she had done.
“I didn’t plan for this to happen,” she whispered.
