I had spent thirty-one years learning my husband’s expressions.
That evening, I watched him realize that the truth had caught up with him.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“Dinner is ready,” I replied.
We sat down.
The food was warm. The plates were full. The room was so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Jenna tried to start a conversation about a television show.
Nobody responded.
Mark asked Daniel about work.
Daniel looked at him for several seconds before setting down his fork.
“How long have you been sleeping with my wife?”
The question landed like a glass shattering against the floor.
Jenna’s face went blank.
Mark immediately pushed back his chair.
“Daniel—”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was low, controlled, and frighteningly calm.
“I asked my wife.”
Jenna looked at me.
Then she looked at Mark.
That was answer enough.
Daniel leaned back.
“Wow.”
