PAGE 3 — THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAS ALREADY DECIDED
The police eventually realized Marcus wasn’t a criminal.
The elderly woman explained everything.
The officers apologized.
Marcus apologized for looking suspicious.
Everyone laughed.
It should have ended there.
But Marcus made one terrible decision.
He stayed.
He should have gone home.
Instead, he decided to help the woman get into her car.
And that’s when the second misunderstanding happened.
The woman handed Marcus the keys.
“Can you open the trunk?”
Marcus pressed the button.
The trunk opened.
Inside was a huge black suitcase.
Mrs. Johnson gasped.
Marcus didn’t hear her.
He was too busy struggling with the suitcase.
“Ma’am, this thing is heavy.”
The woman nodded.
“Yes. My grandson packed it.”
Marcus lifted it.
The suitcase almost pulled his shoulder out of its socket.
“What did he put in here? A refrigerator?”
The woman laughed.
But then a neighbor shouted:
“What’s in the suitcase?”
Marcus turned around.
“Clothes!”
The neighbor narrowed his eyes.
“Are you sure?”
Marcus stared at him.
“No. I haven’t personally inspected the underwear.”
Nobody laughed.
That somehow made everything worse.
Then another neighbor arrived.
“Is this the man the police were called about?”
Marcus pointed at himself.
“Apparently.”
The neighbor whispered something to another person.
Within minutes, the story had changed.
Marcus had apparently tried to steal a car.
Then he had apparently tried to steal a suitcase.
Then someone claimed he had been “watching the neighborhood for weeks.”
Marcus couldn’t believe it.
“I’ve lived here for eight years!”
A man replied:
“Exactly. That’s why you know the area.”
Marcus looked at the sky.
“God, please give me patience.”
His phone suddenly rang.
It was his wife.
“Where are you?”
“I’m outside.”
“Why?”
Marcus sighed.
“It’s complicated.”
“Are you in trouble?”
Marcus looked at the police car.
Then at the neighbors.
Then at the suitcase.
“A little.”
His wife became silent.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing!”
“Marcus, whenever you say ‘nothing,’ something has happened.”
Marcus took a deep breath.
“I was helping an old woman.”
His wife paused.
“Okay.”
“But everyone thinks I’m a criminal.”
Another pause.
Then his wife said:
“Honestly, Marcus… you do have terrible timing.”
Marcus looked offended.
“Thank you for your support.”
“I’ll come get you.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
But before she arrived…
The biggest misunderstanding of the day happened.
