The person on the phone asked me to come in personally and bring identification.
“Is something wrong?” I asked.
“We need to explain the findings to you directly.”
My hands began to shake.
I called Helen and asked her to meet me there.
When I arrived, the doctor who reviewed the results was waiting in a small consultation room.
He closed the door.
“Mrs. Margaret, before we discuss anything, I need to ask you a question. Has your husband ever had access to your prescription medication?”
“Yes.”
“Has he ever collected it from the pharmacy for you?”
“Sometimes.”
The doctor placed the report on the desk.
“The sample contains a sedating substance that should not be present in your tea. Its presence alone doesn’t tell us how much you consumed or what effects it may have had, but it is consistent with your concern that something was added.”
I felt the room tilt.
